Editorial

By Sherly Isaac

This was the email I received in response to my last week’s Editorial, “Dear sis Sherly greetings, I am sad to read your statement saying poverty is a curse, no it isn’t. Remember Jesus went into the world of suffering? Think about it, are we willing?”

But Bible is very clear that poverty is a curse and will come upon those who do not obey the voice of the Lord and do not walk in His ways. Deuteronomy twenty eighth chapter talks about blessings or curses that can come upon a person depending on the decision of the person whether to walk in the ways of God or not.

Here are some of the curses written in Deuteronomy 28
Deu 28:15 "But it shall come to pass, if you do not obey the voice of the LORD your God, to observe carefully all His commandments and His statutes which I command you today, that all these curses will come upon you and overtake you:
Deu 28:16 "Cursed shall you be in the city, and cursed shall you be in the country.
Deu 28:17 "Cursed shall be your basket and your kneading bowl.
Deu 28:18 "Cursed shall be the fruit of your body and the produce of your land, the increase of your cattle and the offspring of your flocks.
Deu 28:19 "Cursed shall you be when you come in, and cursed shall you be when you go out.
Deu 28:20 "The LORD will send on you cursing, confusion, and rebuke in all that you set your hand to do, until you are destroyed and until you perish quickly, because of the wickedness of your doings in which you have forsaken Me.
Deu 28:33 "A nation whom you have not known shall eat the fruit of your land and the produce of your labor, and you shall be only oppressed and crushed continually.
Deu 28:42 "Locusts shall consume all your trees and the produce of your land.
Deu 28:43 "The alien who is among you shall rise higher and higher above you, and you shall come down lower and lower.
Deu 28:44 "He shall lend to you, but you shall not lend to him; he shall be the head, and you shall be the tail.
Deu 28:45 "Moreover all these curses shall come upon you and pursue and overtake you, until you are destroyed, because you did not obey the voice of the LORD your God, to keep His commandments and His statutes which He commanded you.
Deu 28:63 "And it shall be, that just as the LORD rejoiced over you to do you good and multiply you, so the LORD will rejoice over you to destroy you and bring you to nothing; and you shall be plucked from off the land which you go to possess.
Deu 28:64 "Then the LORD will scatter you among all peoples, from one end of the earth to the other, and there you shall serve other gods, which neither you nor your fathers have known; wood and stone.
Deu 28:65 "And among those nations you shall find no rest, nor shall the sole of your foot have a resting place; but there the LORD will give you a trembling heart, failing eyes, and anguish of soul.

In other words you will be brought to nothing if you will not obey God. There would be no prosperity, no blessings, no health, no money nothing. Whatever you will touch will be a disaster. But these things are not promised for those who walk in the ways of God. God put poverty in the category of curse.

It is amazing that many who consider poverty as a blessing; still continue to pray for prosperity and for good job. If poverty is a blessing why do they want to get rid of it from their lives? Even the secular world is fighting to eradicate poverty by spending billions of dollars.

Yes, God wants us to prosper and be filled with His blessings. Apostle Paul says in 2 Cor 8:9, “For you know the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, that though He was rich, yet for your sakes He became poor, that you through His poverty might become rich.”

Jesus went through the ultimate sacrifice for our redemption from our sins and suffering. There is no other sacrifice above that sacrifice. Jesus already finishes the work of redemption and deliverance on the cruel cross by shedding His precious blood. We have to only receive that redemption and deliverance in our lives. By our good works or by sacrificing our lives, we cannot achieve either salvation for our souls or deliverance from our sorrows and sufferings. We cannot even change an iota in our lives. But there is redemption and deliverance at the feet of Jesus. Bring all the curses under the blood of Jesus because no curse could ever stand in the presence of the sacrificed Lamb of God, for He will break those curses from your life. He will turn your curses into blessings.

Father God, in the mighty name of Jesus I rebuke every curse from your children. At this very moment bring deliverance in their lives. Let them come out of their poverty and debt. Open their eyes so that they could see the truth that it is your perfect will that we should prosper and be blessed on this earth. We thank You for answered prayers. We believed and received a prosperous life. Thank You Jesus for listening to our prayers. We give You all the glory, we pray in Jesus name, Amen.

Fight the good Fight

By Sheela Isaac

1 Tim 6:11-12, "But you, O man of God, flee these things and pursue righteousness, godliness, faith, love, patience, gentleness. Fight the good fight of faith, lay hold on eternal life, to which you were also called and have confessed the good confession in the presence of many witnesses."

Our journey towards heaven is nothing but a real battle and the battle is against the real enemy, satan. The day you receive Jesus as your Lord and Savior, the day you get saved the battle begins. Why? Because satan has lost one member from his team. Till you get saved, you are the property of satan and if you do nothing, but keep on traveling along the road through which you travel now, it will lead you to hell. That's why salvation is so necessary for each and every individual who are born in this world. That's why Jesus said, 'unless one is born again he can't see the kingdom of God'. John 3:3, "Jesus answered and said to him, "Most assuredly, I say to you, unless one is born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God." Further Jesus repeats the same with more emphasis in John 3:7, "Do not marvel that I said to you, 'You must be born again.' If salvation was not that important or necessary, Jesus would never have told about it. If you think that because you are born in a Christian home and that's why you have a place in heaven, then you are totally wrong. Unless and until you receive forgiveness of sin and receive Jesus into your life as your savior, you can't get into heaven.

So when you got saved your battle with satan has begun. Bible says that our fight is not against flesh and blood, but against the powers of darkness and the wicked spiritual hosts of heavenly places. Eph 6:12 -13, "For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this age, against spiritual hosts of wickedness in the heavenly places. Therefore take up the whole armor of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand." See how hard this battle is, because we are fighting against demons and the wicked army of satan. It is not an ordinary battle. So it should not be taken lightly because satan is very keen to take back his lost possession. Our battle against satan is a continuous struggle to keep ourselves holy and right in the sight of God. We are not saved to lose it one day. . NO, we are in it to keep it safe and win the race at any cost. That's why Paul says, "fight the good fight of faith and lay hold on eternal life." To fight means that we are not to rest or sleep during our battle. You know that if a player fights in a boxing ring he can't take nap or can't take rest in between. If he naps for a minute or two the opponent will overpower him and defeat him. The same thing is true here also with the spiritual battle. We know that our enemy is far more powerful. Bible says in 1 Pet 5:8-9, "Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil walks about like a roaring lion, seeking whom he may devour. Resist him, steadfast in the faith,......"

Let's see how satan tries to defeat a believer.

1. With evil distractions
2. With good distractions

1. With evil distractions:
Satan knows what points are weak in your side and he always tries to defeat through that one weakness. When most of the animals attack, they always try to catch the head of the prey first. The reason is that they know very well that if they could catch the head they will win the battle. Satan does the same thing. If you had greed for money, satan will throw constant lure in that area. If you were addicted to drugs and alcohol before salvation, satan will try to win you through that area again. If you were in sexual sin, satan would throw lure in that area. If you were addicted to gossip, backbiting, criticizing others satan knows that it is the right area to work with. You know your areas of weakness through which satan could attack and you need to guard that special area from satan, by taking extra caution when you are tempted while dealing with those areas. The Bible says Mat 26:41 "Watch and pray, lest you enter into temptation. The spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak."

2. With good distractions:
When satan sees that he can't entice you in sinful things he plays another role. He is pretty clever and not a high school dropout. He will come with nice package of good things. If you love sports he will come with that temptation. Watching sports is definitely not sin but when you cross the line it becomes sin. What is that line? When you begin to give first priority to games and could not find time for God and other important things, it becomes a snare. For example if you are spending eight hrs a day in watching sports, you definitely do not have extra time to spend with God and your family. If you try to ignore the current package satan has another better package for you. What is that? He will tell you, 'See world cup or Olympics don't come everyday, so it is not bad if you spend a day or two in it. It would not destroy your spiritual walk with God. You will be fine. If you yield to it, it will start as one or two-day event and eventually it will turn into regular occurrence. That's why Bible says in 1 Pet 5:8-9, "Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil walks about like a roaring lion, seeking whom he may devour." Satan knows what the areas are where you could yield to him. If you love hobbies satan will come with good hobby package.

I remember few years back I was trying to learn HTML. I used to surf the web to find new tutorials. Meanwhile I figured out that I am not interested in HTML because it did not look very interesting. So I began to spend time in forums of aquarium. I already had fish aquarium so it looked very fascinating. Slowly without my knowledge I began to spend hours together in fish forums just to learn new things about this hobby. I did not know how time flew away and how, more than a year passed away and how I was so trapped in this hobby that I almost forgot that God said to me to learn HTML. When my family members tried to warn me I did not like it. It is quite possible that your loved ones don't like your TV watching regimen. It is possible that they might have warned you but you don't want to listen to them. Why? Because satan would probably tell you, it is ok, it is a good hobby, nothing is wrong in it. You are not drinking or smoking and you are not doing anything wrong. The good hobbies like sports in tv, learning good things in computers and many other hobbies could create rift in the family. Many families are breaking apart because of computers and tv. I heard many real stories about husbands who do not find time for their wife or children because they are too busy with their computer or TV and slowly it had brought them to the point of divorce.

Many hobbies are indeed very neat and clean and it is not sin but when you leave your priorities and spend your whole time in it, it becomes an idol for you, which you worship without your knowledge. Satan has many good packages for you and he will lure you to the extent that you may not reach to your God given potential. He will bring many distractions and will try to trap you in it so that you can drift away from the things, which God has kept for you. We need to stay vigilant and we need to fight the battle really a good fight so that we may not lose the destination at the end.

The question now is, how can we do that?

Making checklist does the job well. You need a checklist and you need to ask the question to yourself, "did I read the Bible today? did I pray today? If yes, how much time I have spent in prayer? It could be possible that once you were used to pray for two hours but now praying for only fifteen minutes. The same thing could have happened to Bible reading time. My dad is pretty organized. I never saw anybody else this organized. He had his own checklist like spreadsheet. Three years back when he was pretty ill and when he recovered he had to go through many physical therapies. They said to him to continue the same exercises so that he can stay healthy. Even after three years he never forgets those workouts. Why? Because he has a checklist and after each workout he would put a tick mark in the spreadsheet and at the end of the day he knows very well whether he could complete all the workouts or not. In the same way after drinking a glass of water he would do the same thing and at the end of the day he knows how many glasses of water he had. We need that kind of checklist which reminds us if we had read our Bible or not, if we had spent time in prayer or not. Then we will be able to defeat the plans of satan.

Let's fight the good fight and win the battle. Let us not lose our salvation but let us work hard to keep it till the end. All the other things of this world are not that important than going to heaven. What you do today will determine your destiny. How you fight your battle today will determine your future. May the Lord help us to win our battle as Paul said in 2 Tim 4:7, "I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith." Please remember always, "We are in it to WIN the race at any cost."
