We read in the Old Testament that whenever there was a calamity or a tragedy people used to tore their clothes and put on the sackcloth on them. Tearing the cloth was sign of grief and symbol of their broken heart.
Bible talks about many people when they faced great tragedies in their lives they tore their cloth and expressed their grief.
When Joseph was sold and when his brother Reuben returned and found that Joseph was not in the pit, and he tore his clothes, (Gen 37:29) And when Jacob saw the news of his son's death he tore his cloths and mourned as we read in Gen 37:34, "Then Jacob tore his clothes, put sackcloth on his waist, and mourned for his son many days." Thus Jacob expressed his greatest grief in his life and his broken heart.
Tearing cloth was ultimate sign of mourning, grief and broken heart. In the book of Joel 2nd chapter we read that, there is a day coming which is terrifying day. We read in Joel 2:1-2, "Blow the trumpet in Zion, And sound an alarm in My holy mountain! Let all the inhabitants of the land tremble; For the day of the LORD is coming, For it is at hand: A day of darkness and gloominess, A day of clouds and thick darkness, Like the morning clouds spread over the mountains."
This is the day when God will judge people. We also read in Matthew 25th chapter that Mat 25:31, "When the Son of Man comes in His glory, and all the holy angels with Him, then He will sit on the throne of His glory. All the nations will be gathered before Him, and He will separate them one from another, as a shepherd divides his sheep from the goats. And He will set the sheep on His right hand, but the goats on the left. Then the King will say to those on His right hand, 'Come, you blessed of My Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world:"
But we further read in the book of Joel that before this day comes, repent and turn to God. Joel 2:12-13, "Now, therefore," says the LORD, "Turn to Me with all your heart, With fasting, with weeping, and with mourning." So rend your heart, and not your garments; return to the LORD your God, For He is gracious and merciful, Slow to anger, and of great kindness; And He relents from doing harm."
Instead of tearing your cloths tear your heart, repent from your sins and turn to Him. He will forgive your sins. Isaiah says in Isa 1:18, "Come now, and let us reason together," Says the LORD, "Though your sins are like scarlet, They shall be as white as snow; Though they are red like crimson, They shall be as wool."
If you have not yet accepted Jesus as your Lord and Savior, come to Him and give your life to Him. Jesus said in John 5:24, "Most assuredly, I say to you, he who hears My word and believes in Him who sent Me has everlasting life, and shall not come into judgment, but has passed from death into life."
Jesus is ready to forgive and forget all your sins and give you eternal life. Just come to Him.
Women Disciples of Jesus! Part 2
By Sherly Isaac
Two sisters Mary and Martha were among the disciples of Jesus who followed Him as we read in these passages of the Bible, Luke 10:38, John 11:1–44
Luke 10:38-42, "Now it happened as they went that He entered a certain village; and a certain woman named Martha welcomed Him into her house. And she had a sister called Mary, who also sat at Jesus' feet and heard His word. But Martha was distracted with much serving, and she approached Him and said, "Lord, do You not care that my sister has left me to serve alone? Therefore tell her to help me." And Jesus answered and said to her, "Martha, Martha, you are worried and troubled about many things. But one thing is needed, and Mary has chosen that good part, which will not be taken away from her."
Martha invited Jesus in her house and her sister and she both sat at the feet of Jesus and heard His word. Their bond of relationship grew day by day and it seems that Jesus was a frequent visitor in this family. And the Bible tells us that Jesus loved Martha, Mary and Lazarus, their hospitality and their open hearts to receive His Gospel.
Martha lived in the village of bethany with her brother Lazarus and sister Mary. Martha and Mary's real faith was tested when their only brother Lazarus died. Jesus was away and He delayed to come. Both Martha and Mary's hearts were broken and they did not know what to do. All their hopes were lost. Four days later when they saw Jesus they responded, "Lord, if you had been here, my brother would not have died" (John 11:21,32). And when Jesus went to the tomb and asked people to remove the stone from the mouth of the tomb, Martha objected saying, "Lord, by this time there is a stench, for he has been dead four days."
Because of the brokeness of their hearts and the grief both Martha and Mary could not see that the creator of this universe was standing before them and He can do anything for them. They could not fathom the power of one who was standing before them. They could not understand that His one word could bring Lazarus to life. But when Jesus commanded Lazarus to come out of the tomb, at his one command Lazarus started walking and came out of the tomb, Martha and Mary's joy knew no bounds. Their hopes were alive again, their sorrows and tears turned into rejoicing and it was happy dance for them. What a savior they found! Their friendship paid off. Bible tells us in Pro 17:17, "A friend loves at all times...."
Have you made Jesus your friend? He is able to wipe away your tears. He is able to bring you out of your situations of troubles and turmoil. Now we read about Mary that she was the one who anointed the Lord with fragrant oil. Jhn 11:2, "It was that Mary who anointed the Lord with fragrant oil and wiped His feet with her hair, whose brother Lazarus was sick." John 12:3-5, "Then Mary took a pound of very costly oil of spikenard, anointed the feet of Jesus, and wiped His feet with her hair. And the house was filled with the fragrance of the oil. But one of His disciples, Judas Iscariot, Simon's son, who would betray Him, said, "Why was this fragrant oil not sold for three hundred denarii and given to the poor?" And in John 12:7But Jesus said, "Let her alone; she has kept this for the day of My burial. For the poor you have with you always, but Me you do not have always." And in Matthew 26th chapter Jesus said that wherever the gospel is preached, the act of her would be also proclaimed as we read in Mat 26:10 & 12-13, "But when Jesus was aware of it, He said to them, "Why do you trouble the woman? For she has done a good work for Me. Mat 26:12-13, "For in pouring this fragrant oil on My body, she did it for My burial. Assuredly, I say to you, wherever this gospel is preached in the whole world, what this woman has done will also be told as a memorial to her."
These women played a significant role in the ministry of Jesus. Even today there is no distinction between male and female but every person who gives his/her life to Jesus, Jesus can use that life for His glory.
