John 4th chapter talks about the journey of Jesus from Judea to Galilee. Judea is in the southern part of Israel and Jesus was traveling towards the northern part of Israel. Samaria where he took a break for rest is in the middle part of Israel. Bible tells us in John 4:6, "Now Jacob's well was there. Jesus therefore, being wearied from His journey, sat thus by the well. It was about the sixth hour."
As Jesus was sitting by the well, he saw a Samaritan woman coming to fill her jar with water. Jesus started to talk to her. He did not need that she is introduced to Him. Just at one glance He could know what she was and what her life was about. Everything was crystal clear before His eyes. But the woman did not know the identity of the person who was sitting before her and interacting with her? She had no clues that the very creator of the whole universe was in front of her! She was completely amazed when Jesus told her that if she asked, He can give her living water. Her eyes might have widened and she replied in amazement saying in John 4:11, "Sir, You have nothing to draw with, and the well is deep. Where then do You get that living water? Are You greater than our father Jacob, who gave us the well, and drank from it himself, as well as his sons and his livestock?"
She still could not realize who was in front of her and was astonished hearing the talk of Jesus. She was puzzled how Jesus would fulfill His claim of giving her living water when He had nothing to draw with and the well was deep.
But when He explained further, it became clear to her that Jesus was not talking about the water she drank everyday or what she was drawing from the well everyday but He was talking about the Holy Spirit who has been represented as living water. But before she could receive the living water, she needed to confess her sins and turn to God. So Jesus said to her, "Go, call your husband, and come here." But she replied, "I have no husband." Jesus said to her, "You have well said, 'I have no husband, for you have had five husbands, and the one whom you now have is not your husband; in that you spoke truly"(John 4:18-19)
That one encounter with the master of this universe changed everything in her life. She who was sinking in sin, she who was completely messed up, in one moment, her encounter with Jesus- the Savior of the world made her life to turn around, her sins to be forgiven and her past bad life forgotten. She ran to tell her villagers what had happened to her as we read in John 4:28-29, "The woman then left her water pot, went her way into the city, and said to the men, Come, see a Man who told me all things that I ever did. Could this be the Christ?"
Even today our lives are open before God. We cannot hide anything from Him but if we confess our sins, He is ready to forgive and forget all our sins. He is ready to turn our lives around just like He did to the Samaritan woman. Not only was she transformed, but because of her testimony, many from that city came to Christ. When we come to Jesus, when we give our messed up lives in the mighty hands of Jesus, He transforms us and gives us a new life and uses us to turn many lives around.
Prosperity - God's Perfect Will - Part 3
By Sherly Isaac
3John 1:2, "Beloved, I pray that you may prosper in all things and be in health, just as your soul prospers."
This was the prayer John prayed. This prayer tells us that our physical or material prosperity and our good health depend upon the prosperity of our soul. But the question is how can our souls prosper? Often people say that if you want spiritual growth, you must join a Church of believers where you can listen from the word of God and have fellowship with spiritual people. This could be right but God led my family members and I through a different route.
When my family members and I got saved and when we started to grow in the Lord, at that time many believers and many good pastors from other denominations came to our home and said, "you must not stay in the same church because you will not be able to grow in that church." When we heard those things day after day, week after week our hearts were troubled. We did not know where to turn. Though we did not know much about our new found faith yet we knew that we can ask God directly and get His help.
So we all prayed for many days asking God to show us whether we should stay in our Church or leave our Church. We told God that, "Lord, if it is your will to leave our church, we are ready to do that but if not please clearly show us so that we could do according to your will." And God clearly showed us through His words and through the messages of His servants that we must stay where we are. So we stayed in the same Church though it was not easy to stay there. Though often we had to go through very tough times yet we stayed there. At one point God told us that He kept us in a dry and parched land so that the living water could gush through that parched land.
Isa 35:7, "The parched ground shall become a pool, And the thirsty land springs of water; In the habitation of jackals, where each lay, There shall be grass with reeds and rushes."
And I can say that our prayers and labors of years are not in vain but I am sure that one day we will see mighty harvest full of grain. So we stayed in the same church and yet God made us spiritually prosperous because we read our Bible everyday, prayed everyday and often listened to the spiritual messages of Bro. D.G.S. Dhinakaran. I believe that it is our dedication, our determination and willingness to walk with God that makes us to walk closer and closer to Him.
When Jesus was in this world, He never started any Church and I wonder in which Church those people might have gone, those who were turning to Christ? We read in John 4:1-2, "Therefore, when the Lord knew that the Pharisees had heard that Jesus made and baptized more disciples than John (though Jesus Himself did not baptize, but His disciples)."
You can see that many were turning to Christ and were becoming the disciples of Jesus, but we just don't know if they had any meetings together or whether they were just listening to Jesus alone whenever they got chance? David says in Psa 119:11, "Your word I have hidden in my heart, That I might not sin against You."
Fellowship is important but I think more important is to have a closer walk with God.
