Isaiah 9:6-7, "For unto us a Child is born, unto us a Son is given; And the government will be upon His shoulder. And His name will be called Wonderful, Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. Of the increase of His government and peace There will be no end, Upon the throne of David and over His kingdom, To order it and establish it with judgment and justice From that time forward, even forever. The zeal of the LORD of hosts will perform this."
This was the prophecy spoken by Isaiah regarding the coming Messiah. These two verses are pretty much self-explanatory and explains us what the Messiah would be when He comes. Isaiah said, "For unto us a Child is born, unto us a Son is given" then he goes on and explains that this Son is the same Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace and so on. The coming Messiah is the unique Son of God. The Pharisees and Sadducees knew very will about this title. "Son of God" is an extraordinary title that could not be applied to any human being. But this title concerns to God Himself.
When satan came to tempt Jesus, He specifically spoke, "If you are the Son of God... do this...". We read in Matthew 4:3-7, Now when the tempter came to Him, he said, "If You are the Son of God, command that these stones become bread." But Jesus answered and said, "It is written, 'Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceeds from the mouth of God.'" Then the devil took Him up into the holy city, set Him on the pinnacle of the temple, and said to Him, "If You are the Son of God, throw Yourself down. For it is written: 'He shall give His angels charge over you,' and, 'In their hands they shall bear you up, Lest you dash your foot against a stone.'" Jesus said to him, "It is written again, 'You shall not tempt the LORD your God.'"
Once Jesus walked on sea and Peter also wanted to walk on the sea. Then Jesus said, "come". But when he saw that the wind was boisterous, Peter was afraid; and while beginning to sink, he cried out, saying, "Lord, save me!" And immediately Jesus stretched out His hand and caught him, and said to him, "O you of little faith, why did you doubt?" And when they got into the boat, the wind ceased. Then those who were in the boat came and worshiped Him, saying, "Truly You are the Son of God." (Mat 14:30-33)
When Jesus was about to be crucified, the high priest asked Him, "I put You under oath by the living God: Tell us if You are the Christ, the Son of God!" And the answer of Jesus was, "Yes, I am". As we read in Mat 26:64-65, Jesus said to him, "It is as you said. Nevertheless, I say to you, hereafter you will see the Son of Man sitting at the right hand of the Power, and coming on the clouds of heaven." Then the high priest tore his clothes, saying, "He has spoken blasphemy! What further need do we have of witnesses? Look, now you have heard His blasphemy!
Also we read in Mat 27:39-43,"And those who passed by blasphemed Him, wagging their heads and saying, "You who destroy the temple and build it in three days, save Yourself! If You are the Son of God, come down from the cross." Likewise the chief priests also, mocking with the scribes and elders, said, He saved others; Himself He cannot save. If He is the King of Israel, let Him now come down from the cross, and we will believe Him. He trusted in God; let Him deliver Him now if He will have Him; for He said, 'I am the Son of God.'"
By His extraordinary birth, by His unique life time and by His death Jesus proved that He is God Himself who came down in the form of a man to save us from hell fire. Today we can have eternal life because of His sacrifice.
The Messiah
By Sherly Isaac
In this time of year we celebrate the birth of Jesus. Even before the coming of Jesus to this world, prophets proclaimed about the coming of Messiah. There were more than 300 prophecies fulfilled on the birth of Jesus. One such prophecy is written in Micah 5:2-5, "But you, Bethlehem Ephrathah, Though you are little among the thousands of Judah, Yet out of you shall come forth to Me The One to be Ruler in Israel, Whose goings forth are from of old, From everlasting. Therefore He shall give them up, Until the time that she who is in labor has given birth; Then the remnant of His brethren Shall return to the children of Israel. And He shall stand and feed His flock In the strength of the LORD, In the majesty of the name of the LORD His God; And they shall abide, For now He shall be great To the ends of the earth; And this One shall be peace."
The above verse gives us a sketch of the life of Messiah and that He would come from Bethlehem. Though Jesus' parents were not of Bethlehem yet they had to travel to Bethlehem because there was a decree which went out from Caesar Augustus that all the world should be registered. (Luke 2:1)
So Joseph and Mary also had to go to Bethlehem to register their names and while they were there Jesus' birth took place. So Jesus was born in Bethlehem.
Then further those verses tell us that the Messiah will be ruler in Israel, whose goings forth are from of old, From everlasting. It means that He is the eternal King whose kingdom shall not end. He will rule forever and forever.
He is also the shepherd who will lead His flocks. David recognized God as His shepherd in Psalm 23:1, "The LORD is my shepherd; I shall not want." And in John 10:11 Jesus said, "I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd gives His life for the sheep."
This good shepherd gave His precious life for us so that we could have eternal life. This good shepherd will lead us to the end if we give our lives in His hands. This good shepherd will provide everything necessary for our lives if we dedicate our lives in His mighty hands. Because He is the eternal God who took the form of a man to give life to our lifeless spirits.
Finally it says, "And this One shall be peace". Today people are looking for peace because there is no peace. Nations are raging against nations, wars are going on and this world is in turmoil. But in this peaceless world we can have great peace in our hearts, if we accept Jesus as our Lord and Savior. Because He is 'peace', He gives peace that this world cannot give. He removes anxiety and fills our hearts with great peace that surpasses all understanding.
My friend, you could be having no peace in your heart today. You may be in complete distress but I would like to introduce to you the King of kings and Lord of lords who is the peace. He came in this world; just to give us peace and joy that this world cannot give. If you come to Him, He will fill you with His great peace and joy and more than that He will give you eternal life.
